Couples and Family Conflict Resolution

Couples and Family Conflict Resolution

Most people assume that mediation is solely when a couple is separating.  In fact families can sometimes avoid a fracture in the family.  Sometimes the spark that ignites the tension in the family can be put out before irreparable harm is caused. Talking through a particularly contentious issue that threatens the fabric of a family before it gets out of hand is beneficial to the entire family unit and can help to preserve the structure that exists. Sometimes small issues can create a seismic disagreement, that if not stemmed immediately, will blow up and threaten the otherwise happy household. Issues can range from parenting styles to chores to education to religious upbringing to dealing with the in-laws.

These issues have solutions and sometimes the introduction of a neutral party to the conversation will result in resolving matters “outside of the box”. These issues can involve only the couple or the family unit. The parties have the ability to vent and outline their frustrations in a “safe” environment; everyone is heard and behaviors to lessen the household disputes can be introduced. It teaches listening as a valuable family tool. For children or the more passive spouse, a comfortable setting where they can speak and be listened to, can allow for a more open dialogue and contribution to the resolution. This can present a long term solution to personality struggles that have prevented accords and agreements from being reached in the past.
